The end of the road

August 31, 2008 · 1 Comment

Friday brought about my final day with Stef, which being my third placement as the Apprentice, also marked my final day as the 2007 Graduate Apprentice.  Its been a long year, but a truly fantastic one, which has completely gone beyond all of my initial expectations.

I had two fantastic placements with Deloitte and LMM, and now can look back on what was another brilliant experience.  During the sixteen weeks with Stef, I worked on a huge range of projects, getting involved in the Big City Plan, working on Digital Media events as well as working with clients of 3Form.  However, the main project was Stef’s new idea, Odadeo.  Odadeo is all about Dads, its social network with a difference. Highly interactive and highly useful, I have been working with the beta testing Dads for the last few weeks, finding out what they want from the site, how they use it, and then turning it into development points for Stef to work on.  I’ve been writing legal documents, been coming up with ideas for our pitch, and recently, making video walkthroughs of various features, so that new users can see what the site is all about.

I’m very sad to be leaving Odadeo, I truly do think that its a fantastic idea, which will take off.  I hope to look back at the project in a few months and say that I was a part of it.  It could be the next big thing on the web.

But more than that, I have worked from Stef’s home over the last four months, and I’m thankful that Emily, Imogen and Stef allowed me into their home.  I have learnt so much, much more than I could have imagined that I would.  At times the work has been varied and difficult, but at all times its been the challenge and experience that I expected as the Graduate Apprentice.  Stef is a unique individual, creating ideas from nothing, and it was great to be part of that process.  I am sure that I am a more creative individual because of it.

I now head back to Deloitte, to being my life as a International Tax Associate.  I worked in the same department as the Apprentice, which is why I am sure that there will be people around to help me settle back in.

Looking back on my year as the Graduate Apprentice is tough to do, I still haven’t quite come to terms with the fact that its no longer my role but I can say this.  As a new Graduate last June, I was lost, unsure of a career path and lacking direction.  I assumed that something would come up… well it did.  The Apprentice has given me a diverse range of business experience, its shown me career paths I never knew existed and taught me how to go about achieving what I want from life.  But more than that, I have had a year working with absolutely fantastic people, both directly and indirectly.  I have met people who are going to be key in the city for many years to come, and my hope is that I can also play my role in the years to come.  To my employers, Deloitte, LMM, and Odadeo, thank you.  There are too many individuals to mention, but I will be taking the time to individually email them all.

So here’s to looking forward, and a new daily motto, Challenge Yourself… something I aim to do every day.

Making Videos for Odadeo

August 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Its my last week as the Apprentice with Stef, meaning that my work with the new Dad’s Site, Odadeo, is soon to be over.  On of the final things that I’m working on are videos of all of the features on the site.  Using some cool software to record my actions on screen (iShowU) and Vimeo as the host for our videos, we are soon to have a collection of short videos showing existing and potential users of the site what they can do.  I have even been techically able enough to embed the videos into the Odadeo Blog, and wanted to do the same here!

So take a look at the below, its how you make a pledge towards being a better Dad on Odadeo.  Its simple, and its short, but it could just be the next big thing.

The Odadeo Blog

July 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

While Odadeo continues to develop, Stef and I are maintaining a blog to keep track of our progress.  Today we are encouraging the Dads signed up to add themselves to the Dads Map, one of the new features that we have been introducing over the past few weeks.  Its going really well, with lots of our fantastic Dads already placing themselves on the map, with Dads all over the globe!

So take a look at the Odadeo Blog, see what we are up to, and if your signed up… Add yourself to the Dad Map!

What Would You Wish For?

June 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

One of the great features of working with Stef is the variety of the placement, and today was a perfect example of just how the Creative Sector work.  We spend the afternoon at the Kitchen Garden Cafe (who make excellent BLT’s by the way) with Andrew Dubber, playing around with one of his ideas.  Its a very simple one, but after a very productive afternoon, the idea was turned into reality. Its called I So Wish… and you can view the site here.

Andrew wanted to create somewhere on the web where anyone could simply visit a site and make a wish.  No sign ups, no profiles, no mess, just the ability to make a very simple wish and leave it there for the rest of the World to see.  Stef and I have been working on something similar with the “pledges” on Odadeo, and Stef used it as a great opportunity to ‘flex his rails’ (N.B – Rails is a piece of software used to code websites.  Its apparently very easy and simple to use, but it still looks like foreign to me!).  The results are fantastic, a very user friendly little site which fits the purpose perfectly, as seen below:

What Would You Wish For?

So take a look and make a wish.  Its completely open, you can wish for whatever you want… so feel free to be creative.  There are sure to be lots of developments on the site, and perhaps some of the wishes may even be granted…

Odadeo is Live!

June 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Anyone who has been keeping track of recent posts will have noticed suggestions of a ‘new project’ which Stef and I have been working on, all of which has been very hush hush… but now its time to talk about it!

The new site was launched on Fathers Day, Sunday 15th June, and in a nutshell, its a website which is aimed at helping dads answer one question… how am I going to be a better dad?”  The site has all sprung from the birth of Stef’s daughter, Imogen, around 18 months ago.  Like all Web savvy expectant Dads, Stef trawled through countless websites looking for advice for expectant fathers, what to expect, what to do and how to ensure that Imogen got the best possible Dad.  The truth is that while there is a huge amount of information out there, none of it is coordinated, and there is no where for Dad’s to get together and share their varying experiences… our aim is that Odadeo is this resource.

The last few weeks have been very hectic… I am about as technically minded as a walrus, so my job has been to test, test, test and test the site while Stef works on the behind the scenes development.  We have bounced ideas off each other, and hopefully what we have come up with is a easy to use site where Dads can pledge to being a better father.  So far, its going really well… after the ‘too early beta’ launch on Sunday we have got around 100 fully signed up Dads.  Most are from the UK, but we have Australia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Russia represented which is fantastic considering we are still in such an early stage of development.  There have been very few ‘teething’ problems to date, and most people seem to be using the site exactly as expected.

I am thrilled to be involved with this project… As the Apprentice I was sure I was going to have a year of learning, but as soon as Stef pitched this idea to me, I was really keen to help out.  I’m not yet a father, I do have two imaginary daughters for the purposes of the site, but it has really struck me in recent weeks how Mum orientated most services on the web are.  Ultimately, Dads are 50% of the process, and our research shows that many want much more of an active role in the upbringing of their children.  Odadeo aims to bring them closer to their kids, and by linking their role to a pledge, hopefully benefit all parties involved.  There are some great features on the site which enable this to happen, and plenty more on the way, but right now, we have a place where Dads can share experiences, can ask questions and can pledge… the Odadeo journey has begun.

If you would like an invite to be part of the site, just drop me a quick email jason(at)odadeo(dot)com with a brief reason as to why you want to be part of the development process, and I will sort you out with an Invite Code.
