Welcome To Birmingham

October 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

On Wednesday 8th October I’m going to be joining around 200 other new graduates in the City at Birmingham Future’s Welcome to Birmingham Event. The event was held for the first time last year, and was such a sucess that it will be repeated again for many years to come.It is basically a chance for a range of new Graduates in the city to get together in one place, and to receive a welcome from people who like them, joined Birmingham as graduates and have now established their careers here. This year, Peter Rees-Steer and Anthony McCourt are going to be speaking, as well as a brief networking session with Sarah Gee.

The event is held at the prestigous council house, and hopefully will be a chance for new graduates to make some friends who are at similar stages of thier career. Birmingham Future run a range of networking events, aimed at encouraging more people to get involved with the city, and this is a fantastic place to start.

New Members Lunch

July 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As part of my new role with Birmingham Future’s Membership Committee, I had the pleasure of attending the most recent new members lunch today.  The event is designed for all of the new members to Birmingham Future in the previous few months, basically a chance to meet some new faces over some sandwiches.  Matt Taylor, the Birmingham Future chair took five minutes to welcome everyone to the event and tell us about some of the things that the organisation are involved with under his reign.  It was a very well attended event, with about 40 people there, and was very kindly hosted by KPMG.

I met some great people who have just joined Future, and hopefully after hearing about the rather hectic but fantastic year that I have had, they will be keen to become a little more involved with what Future do.  My time as the Apprentice is almost at an end, but I will be continuing on the GIE committee and now as deputy chair of the membership committee, Birmingham Future is very much part of my involvement within the city.

There are some key reasons for that, but perhaps the most prominent is the people that I get to meet and work with.  I have expanded my contact book beyond all belief this year, not only people that may be useful as a source of business in years to come, but people that I know I can call upon for their advice should the time come.  I’m going to be taking part in the Birmingham Half Marathon as part of the Future team just one example of the range of activities you can get involved with.  I have high aspirations, which are driven by being part of the city.  It if was not for Future, then I would actually be without a job… but the fact that eight or so people sat around a table 18 months ago, gave up their free time and effort and continued to run what is a fantastic opportunity for any Graduate, means that I now have a future to look forward to… excuse the pun.

So if you are reading this and you are not involved in Birmingham Future, but you think that it could be the right way to get ahead in your career and be part of this fantastic city, then I am here to tell you that assumption is correct! Find out a little more about what they do at their website… or drop me an email.

Introducing Mayur

July 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Sitting on the balcony on a summer’s evening is a great way to contemplate how far things have progressed this year.  I began my role as the Graduate Apprentice 2007 back on the 17th September of last year, and almost 11 months later, its time to begin thinking about handing on the role.  With that, I have been thinking a lot about the time that I have had, the things I’ve learnt this year, and importantly, the fantastic people that have helped me to embed myself within this fantastic city.  There will be a further blog post later on, once I’ve had time to evaluate everything that has happened, and to thank each individual concerned.

But right now, its time to introduce the next Apprentice, Mayur Murali.  Mayur was selected back in June, after an extremely tough interview process.  He instantly accepted the role, and I have every confidence that he is going to take this fantastic opportunity to even greater heights. I wish him the very best of luck in what I know will be a truly amazing year.

So below please meet the team for the Graduate Apprentice 2008.  Mayur will be undertaking placements with Deloitte, in the same team that I will be re-joining as a full time Graduate.  He will then move on to work with Giles and the team at LMM, where there are some more challenging projects lined up for him.  Finally, Mayur will work with the new placement, VC Consulting, who we are thrilled to have as part of the set up.  Much like me, there are three very seperate challenges, where I know he will be given a fantastic insight into the professional services world.  Pictured below (left to right) are: Shihab Hossain, VC Consulting Director, Rachel Hewson of Deloitte, Giles Horwitch-Smith, CEO of LMM and Mayur himself.

Mayur will be continuing the trend of blogging his experience as the Graduate Apprentice, but right now, you can read a little more about how he reacted to being offered the role.

For me, with about five weeks left, its time to begin thinking about what next… who am I, what is my next challenge…

Talking Apprentice

July 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As is probably quite clear to everyone reading the blog, the Apprentice programme is something that I am passionate about.  The opportunity it has given me is unrivaled and has put me in an incredible position to go on and achieve a lot within this great city.

As my time as the Apprentice draws to an end, its time to start reflecting on the fantastic year that I’ve had, and to start talking about the programme.  I had one such opportunity with Biz TV recently, part of the Aston University set-up.  They were kind enough to interview about how I got the role, my three placements and my plans going forward.  Please take a look at the link below to hear me talk about my time.

Interviewing The Next Apprentice

June 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I always knew that my time as the Apprentice would come to an end, and that I would have to hand over the role to someone else.  That time is not quite upon me as yet, but we have chosen the person who will be taking on the challenge of being Birmingham Future’s Graduate Apprentice

Interviews were held on Friday 13th June, which could have been an omen, but I’m pleased to say that we had five fantastic candidates at the interview stage, a great representation of the Graduate talent that is currently available in the UK.  I was invited to form part of the presentation panel, along with some fellow members of the GIE Committee, where we asked each candidate to present to us on a topic that they felt strongly about.  Their range of topics chosen was varied and fantastic, and on more than one occasion the three of us on the panel allowed the presentations to slip slightly over the alloted three minutes so that we could hear more!

Following the presentation, we had a few questions just to get an idea of what drives each individual, and make our minds up as to how they would perform as the Apprentice 2008.  After this, we sent the five prospective Apprentice’s into the lions den, or the employers as we like to call them.  Here they were grilled in depth about their previous experience, their weaknesses and their ambitions… all those questions that someone fresh out of University hates!

But I am delighted to confirm that our chosen candidate impressed all on the day, and has since accepted the role for the coming year.  I am sure that you are going to hear a lot more about Mayur as his time comes around, and I hope that together we drive the scheme forward, continuing to show young professionals that Birmingham is the place to be.

As an aside, it was a great learning experience to be part of my first interview panel, and I did learn a lot on the day about what it can be like.  I am sure that at some point during my coming work career, I will again be interviewed, and perhaps interview others, so its great to start building these skills early.  The Graduate Apprentice is all about building an impressive skill set to be able to succeed in any professional services role, and that is certainly what it has been to me.  I look forward to handing the baton to Mayur, who I am sure is going to do a fantastic job.

Living in the Real World

May 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Back at the beginning of April, I was asked to complete a questionnaire on what it was like to be a graduate living in the West Midlands, something which is actually very new to me, but something which as the Graduate Apprentice, I have a unique opportunity to shout about.

I am passionate about the area, living in the city centre has been fantastic for both Laura and I to date, and I could not recommend it more highly to anyone.  I described living in Birmingham as “Offering the perfect balance between a professional and personal lifestyle” and I stand by that.  If you want to get involved in the city, there are a number of ways you can, but if you just want to work hard and play hard, Birmingham has the answers.  Anyway, I was lucky enough to be featured in Real World Magazine, something which goes out to graduates across the country.  It even features the name associated with the Apprentice, Sir Alan, on the front cover.  I would just like to point out that the Graduate Apprentice is not part of the BBC programme, its something totally different all-together.  But it does provide some great press coverage for what is a fantastic role, so who am I to complain.  You can read the full magazine here, scroll through to page 36 to see the interview.

BYPY – The Awards

May 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Its kind of like the oscars for young professionals in Birmingham.  Run by Birmingham Future and Forward, Birmingham Young Professional of Year is an award ceremony which recognises the massive contribution that a number of young people make to the region.  As the Apprentice, I was invited to be part of this fantastic evening, and it was certainly that.

Held at the ICC, and attended by about 500 people, it was something that I had been looking forward to for a while.  As you will be aware, I’m passionate about the city, and events like this are key to ensuring that young people within the city are involved in its development, and that the work that they do is recognised.  I actually had a personal interest in the awards, with two people I know very well through my year as the Apprentice, were actually up for awards.  Graham Nicoll, my professional mentor, was nominated in the finance category, but was unfortunately not successful in picking up the award.  However, Graham has only been in the region for a short while, but has achevied a massive amount… I have complete confidence that a BYPY award will be with Graham in the coming years.  My second mentor, Anthony McCourt of Wragge & CO, who I sit on the Graduates Into Employment Committee, was successful, both in the Legal Services catergory, and as the overall winner of BYPY.  Anthony has been a fantastic support for me this year.  Moving to a new area, taking on a very new role, and being involved in so much, it has been great for me to have Anthony there as a sounding board, and he is truly deserving of the award.  I am sure that a great year is ahead for Anthony, and I am sure that he is going to be a big part of the city for a long time to come yet.

The truth was that each of the 21 nominees for various awards during the evening deserved to be mentioned.  There is so much going on in the city, in so many areas.  I was lucky enough to meet a lot of new people during the evening, some inspiring young individuals and some people who have been involved in the development of so much of the city.  The event itself is testament to what a great city that Birmingham is, and to the work and dedication of the Birmingham Future team who organise the evening.  They put on a brilliant event, one which they should be proud of, and one which will be hard to follow.

So in all, as a young, new member of Birmingham’s professional community, I was honoured to be part of an event which celebrates the future.  One day, I hope to make my own mark on the city, I’m still finding my feet and working out what skills I can bring to the city.  Whatever I aim to do, it will be tough to follow in any of the footsteps being taken by those involved now, and I am sure that the work that they are doing now is turning Birmingham into a real destination for the future for all young professionals.  Its a future that again, I am proud to be part of.

The Skills Gap

May 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Like most Graduates, when I completed my degree I was assured that I had the skills I needed to go out into the real world and make a success of myself… exactly what that was doing was still up for debate, but at congregation, Bill Bryson informed me that I was ready to take on the world, and using the skills I had been equipped with though my three years at Durham, I would make a difference.  Now I am sure that without my years at Durham I would be in the position that I am now, but given that I am due to speak at Newman College in Birmingham later this month, its a good chance to reflect on the skills I thought that I had, and thought that I would need when I left University, and the skills that I feel are important to my role now, and importantly, my future career.

I spent a lot of time updating my CV just before Graduation, added some text to back up my career choices to date, and set about writing a small blurb on myself.  To do this, I attempted to talk about the skills that I thought I had shown to date, and how they could be important to business.  Team working was key to me, an ability to take on a number of roles within a team and to ensure that overall objectives are met.  I was also able to talk about my competitive nature as shown by my involvement with Rowing, as well as building on the commercial awareness that I picked up during a range of part time jobs before and through University.  Added to this, I put some general information about computer skills, a basic understanding of two European Languages.

After turning all of the above into a more ‘readable’ group of sentences, I sat back and truly thought that I was fully equipped to take on the world.  However, the truth is that I had hardly begun to think about some of the skills that I would need when embarking on a professional services career.

These days, new graduates are expected to be able to cover all of the above as basic.  What is important now to employers, in my opinion, is a creative mind-set, the ability to look at a problem and find a solution that no-one else can.  To then be able to freely and effectively communicate that solution to others, is again vital.  You need to be able to talk to a wide range of people, and build a working relationship with them that provides both parties with benefits.  This means that you need to start thinking about building networks, something which after eight or so months as the Apprentice, I am sure is one of my most important soft skills.  Networking is something that can be learned, and I am reading a fantastic book at the minute which gives some idea of where to start, Andy Lopata’s “And death came third…“.  I am also a firm believer that creative thinking can also be taught, where you can encourage and develop your mind into thinking about problems in a new way, and as such, find innovative solutions.

There are also other very important skills that are key to a success in any time of business.  Simple telephone manner, the ability to write a coherent email, as well as being able to hold a simple yet intelligent conversation with a work colleague about a subject you feel strongly about… all key factors in getting noticed and becoming a success at work.  These seem to be very simple skills, but it would appear that not enough Graduates are making clear that they have them.  Perhaps its a lost art, I was certainly not taught how to write an email as part of my degree, but then again I imagine that those sorts of skills are Firm dependent, and as such are difficult to learn before you become part of the firm.

My next placement will take me to work with a Freelance Creative, Stefan Lewandowski who is one of the most creative people that I have met to date, and who represents a hugely active but not always appreciated market segment.  I have seen the benefits of creative thinking at work, and I am delighted that as the Apprentice I will have the chance to learn from one of the masters, and hopefully impart some of my creative thinking on the projects I will be involved with.

In all, I believe that there still is a skills gap, one between where Graduates think that they are following graduation and the skills that employers are expecting them to demonstrate.  I am delighted, and very humbled, at being given the chance to talk to people at Newman College about my experience, and all I am going to do is tell them to think about things a little differently, and hopefully that will help some of them.

Handmade Burgers and Graduates Into Employment

April 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’m just back from another great evening out, again made by the company.  As the Apprentice, I’m fortunate enough to sit on Birmingham’s Future’s Graduates Into Employment Committee.  The group of volunteers aim to address the challenges faced by new graduates to the city, and to run events and workshops which encourage them to stay and help develop the way the city works.  They are responsible for the running of my job, The Graduate Apprentice, as well as the Welcome to Birmingham Event mentioned in previous posts.

Tonight, however, was not about work, and was a chance for us all to catch up over a Handmade Burger and a drink.  I choose the venue, and Mike from Marketing Birmingham was incredibly kind in picking up the bill. It was  a great chance to find out a little more about people, like how some like to surf, others play netball and all of us seem to be worried about when we are having kids… or rather our parents are! I’m only 23, so mine are way off yet, but at least I have chosen the names.

In all, it was again a great evening in a great city.  I know that I do rave on about it, but I really do believe that Birmingham is a fantastic place to be, a place made by the people within it.  Everyone involved with Birmingham Future are involved because they want to, and because they believe that they can add to the fantastic city that it is.  I spent an evening discussing where young professionals could live in the city, how difficult it is to find somewhere in the middle, with all of the benefits of a house, but still close enough to walk into the city centre.  We all decided that the lack of recycling in Birmingham is an issue, one which could be quite easy to address.  I guess the old phrase ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ springs to mind, but not allowing a tenant of a building to recycle commercial waste because the skip would create an eyesore is a problem… is no-one thinking about the long term?

I’m lucky to be in Birmingham, a few changes along the way and I would not be, but now that I am here, I am determined to make my mark on the city.  Birmingham Future, and the Graduates Into Employment Committee are one piece of the jigsaw, and again I am proud to be involved.  No other city can offer young professionals the chance to become involved in so much, as well as giving them the chance to build networks which grow and develop their business.

In all, Handmade Burgers and like-minded young professionals are a great combination to fill an evening.  There truly are some fantastic people in Birmingham, with some fantastic ideas, and I look forward to a future where those ideas are realised.
